We encourage contributions to The Reprobate from writers and visual creatives. New writers are always welcome and we put very few restrictions on what or how you write. We would suggest a cursory look through our articles to get a few for what we are about, but the best plan is simply to get in touch and discuss ideas. We allow (almost) all viewpoints, regardless of whether or not we agree with them – there are exceptions and we are bound by the laws that govern speech, but generally, we are open to all ideas. The Reprobate is nothing if not eclectic.
The kind of things that especially interest us are:
Retro pop culture studies – movies, music, literature and beyond
Articles about forgotten figures from the past
Articles about fascinating stories that are ‘hidden in plain sight’ – that is, commonplace cultural artefacts that are never really discussed
Dissections of censorship, moralising, moral panics and twitchy paranoia
Passionate defences of free speech and free expression
Outsider Art
Obsolete technology and dated modernism
Sexuality and eroticism, fetish culture and adult entertainment
Fashion, style and design
Bad science and mumbo jumbo
Food and drink
We prefer the deep dive to the quick skim and encourage the personal reminiscence – feel free to wander off on tangents or use a subject as the springboard to a much wider piece. Gonzo journalism is still encouraged here. There are no minimum word counts, but more importantly, there are no maximum word counts either. remember: too much is never enough.
We do not, at this point, offer any payment for writing or visual contributions – this site does not make a profit and we are not in a position to pay anyone right now. We very much hope that the situation will change, but for now, this is very much a labour of love. . We may, however, be able to provide you with review material or other non-monetary rewards and should that profit situation ever change, so will the payment situation. All contributors maintain full copyright over their own work and are free to reuse it in any way they see fit. We would appreciate an ‘originally published at’ link back to the original version on any republished text, of course. In any case, if you are going to write unpaid, why not do it for us rather than overpriced academic journals?
If you are an artist, photographer, model, filmmaker or musician who is interested in having their work featured on The Reprobate, we’d love to hear from you. If you’ve written a Reprobate-friendly book and want us to run an extract, let us know.
And if you wish to become a part of the Reprobate team in any other way – perhaps ways that we haven’t even thought of yet – feel free to email us with ideas.
