Great Balls O’Comfort – Caroline Munro Advertises Noxzema Shaving Cream

The cult movie queen’s ball-cupping ad for shaving cream proved too much for some USTV stations.

In 1977, Caroline Munro was still juggling her career between cult movies like Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, Dracula AD 1972 and The Spy Who Loved Me and advertising work. Her most famous work in the latter area was for Lambs Navy Rum (and we’ll return to that at a later point, have no fear), but she also popped up to add some much-needed (if unlikely) sex appeal to Noxzema Medicated Shave Cream, which came in a bland can and clearly wasn’t the top of anyone’s glamorous product list. Offering ‘great balls o’ comfort’ – and showing Caroline cupping said balls – was probably a smart move, even if some Southern US states banned the commercial as being too sexy for TV. Were they right? Find out for yourself…

Munro, of course, would go on to star in notorious horror movies like Maniac, The Last Horror Film and Don’t Open Till Christmas, had a brief and eccentric recording career and has maintained her cult icon status beyond that of many of her rivals, currently hosting the Talking Pictures TV Cellar Club slot.
