Brooke Candy’s Art Porn Film I Love You Is An Extraordinary Pansexual Spectacle

For those of you who don’t know, Brooke Candy is an electropop rapper with a strong sexual persona, a former stripper and Hustler stylist who performed songs like I Wanna Fuck Right Now. She’s one of the most fascinating characters in the modern music scene, injecting an overt pansexual positivity into a world of prudish sterility. She’s performed with the likes of Sia and Charli XCX, had a major label recording career and cosmetics sponsorships, so she’s not exactly an obscure fringe artist. Which makes her new film all the more interesting.

I Love You is produced by PornHub, as part of their Visionaries Directors Club, and damn if that doesn’t sound like an exciting concept. Candy’s film (which she directs but does not appear in) is art cinema, certainly – don’t expect the usual sort of PornHub product in this 40 minute movie. But equally, while soft focus and romantic and a bit hippy infused, this is definitely hardcore stuff, with three scenes – one lesbian, one gay and one trans – providing something for everyone. Well, everyone except the regular straight male PornHub viewer perhaps, who might not find this to their taste. Or perhaps they might. I imagine straight male PornHub viewers are a lot more open-minded than most people. And if Deep Throat meets The Holy Mountain by way of Bruce La Bruce and Matthew Barney and starring Asa Akira  sounds at all exciting – and you know it does – then you’ll want to check this out immediately.

The whole thing feels like the sort of experimental erotic movie making that used to be big (well, biggish) in the early 1990s. In that sense, it breaks no new ground, but the idea that an online porn site can both attract and provide an outlet for mainstream artists looking to explore erotic ideas is pretty intriguing – Candy’s film was preceded by a movie by rapper Young M.A. Given the current climate, it’s a breath of fresh air, and hopefully the first of many. Though of course, such art films will soon be verboten for British viewers as the government’s onerous porn restrictions come into force.
