Jacques Rivette’s The Nun Returns To UK Cinemas

Jacques Rivette’s 1966 masterpiece La Religieuse – better known as The Nun in English territories – is set to return to UK cinemas on July 27th, ahead of a September blu-ray release from StudioCanal. Adapted from Denis Diderot’s 1780 novel and banned in France, the film tells the story of Suzanne Simonin (Anna Karina) who is forced into a repressive and brutal convent life. Not only a great work of 1960s French cinema from one of the masters, La Religieuse also paved the way for the nunsploitation genre of the 1970s, a genre that has attracted everyone from Walerian Borowczyk to Joe D’Amato.

The film has had a 4K restoration, and so should look spankingly nice on the big screen. As huge fans of both Rivette and naughty nuns, we’re very excited for this new edition.
