James Last Plays Silver Machine, Children Of The Revolution And School’s Out

Easy listening maestro James Last produced countless editions of his Non-Stop Dancing albums, where he crafted loungetastic versions of the hits of the day into super-groovy medleys. Many of these are pretty spectacular, but none quite matches the astounding magnificence of 1973’s collision of Hawkwind’s Silver Machine, T. Rex’s Children of the Revolution and Alice Cooper‘s School’s Out.

The version on the LP is pretty sensational, but the classic performance was on Last’s long-running and always jaw-dropping Star Parade – a German TV musical variety show that was a mainstay on British ITV networks in the graveyard slot just before closedown on a Sunday night, back in the days before all-night broadcasting (we’ll be bringing you more treats from this show at some point). Check out the kick ass guitar solo and the funky brass, the swirling sound effects, the band of Seventies hipsters and Last’s exceptional conducting, and tell us that these are not the definitive versions of these three tracks.
