An impressive reading of the Poe classic by the legendary Hammer Horror star.
Back in the late 1970s, Christopher Lee read several Edgar Allan Poe stories for a couple of early talking books, released on cassette tape by Listen for Pleasure, a pioneering Canadian audiobook company that was distributed by EMI in the UK.
Tales of Horror and Tales of Mystery and Horror featured cracking versions of some of Poe’s best-known stories, including The Pit and the Pendulum. Unfettered by sound effects or music, these are, I would suggest, the best spoken word renditions of Poe’s work you’ll ever hear.
Oddly, these don’t seem to have been re-released on digital formats, but you can find most of the stories online.
