In the weird world that is Japanese pop music, Ladybaby were possibly the weirdest of them all. Their music was a kawaii metal explosion in the style of Babymetal – infectious pop tunes with a furious, growling metal backing – but they upped the bizarro aspect by having two teenage idol girls supported by a large, bearded Australian pro-wrestler who would dress as a little girl. This was, to say the least, very strange, if not nightmarish.

Now, The Idol Formerly Known As Ladybaby are carrying on the musical tradition, minus the scary man – now a duo of Rie Kaneko and Rei Kuromiya, they seem to be smartly satirising the whole Japanese idol scene.

Their latest single, Pinky! Pinky! is a typically catchy musical hybrid, and the video sees them battling zombies, wearing gas masks and armed with baseball bat and shovel, as they prove that friendship conquers all. It’s amusingly eccentric stuff, as is the European formatting of the single, which consists of digital music, a physical poster and a baseball cap, in a limited edition of 50.
